Basketball Bundesliga team BG Göttingen is about to make its second trip abroad. After a win and a loss last weekend in Belgium, the Violets jetted from Cologne to Porto in Portugal on Thursday afternoon.
Göttingen – In the city of 238,000 in the north of the country, the Göttingen team will play three more test matches. The Violets also announced the return of center Philipp Hartwich on Wednesday evening.
He is supposed to replace Harper Kamp, who had surgery (see extra text below).
On Friday it’s against the Spanish ACB first division club Bilbao at 7 p.m., on Saturday at 5 p.m. against hosts Porto and on Sunday at 5 p.m. against Liège (Benelux League). Participation in the tournament came about through an email request, reports Foucart. A Polish team was canceled, so it was convenient for him to step in for them. The game in Jena that was actually planned for the upcoming weekend was canceled.
“We want to try to take further important steps,” says the BG coach, describing the plan for the three-pack test, which will certainly be very demanding, especially since all of the Violets’ opponents also play internationally.
Also taking part in Portugal is Deondre Burns, who injured his ankle on the first day of training and has not yet been used in the tests. “He took part in the entire training session on Wednesday,” said Veilchen coach Foucart, who reported good and not so good moments from last weekend’s double appearance in Belgium. Burns, who was intended as a playmaker and was the second-best scorer in the entire FIBA Europe Cup last season, is now expected to make his first appearances in Portugal, although in terms of minutes it will probably still be in a measured form. Apart from Harper Kamp, all other players are taking part in the trip to the Iberian Peninsula. Surprise coup: 2.18 meter center Philipp Hartwich returns to Göttingen from Würzburg
BG Göttingen has reacted to Harper Kamp’s injury-related absence. The Bundesliga basketball team from southern Lower Saxony is bringing Philipp Hartwich back to the university town. The 2.18 meter tall German center is moving from league rivals Würzburg Baskets to Göttingen and will receive a contract until the end of the season.
“I am pleased that we were able to sign Phil. From a human perspective, his personality fits very well into our team. Our philosophy of fast play with mobile players also fits his style of play. Its length gives us another interesting aspect. So we have three big guys with different profiles,” says BG coach Olivier Foucart about the 27-year-old. “Phil has worked hard in his rehabilitation over the past year, but will certainly need a little time to get used to playing five-on-five again,” said Foucart.
Hartwich knows the BG well, because the center already wore the purple dress in the 2021/22 season. In 34 games, the German was on the floor for an average of around 14 minutes. In the summer of 2022, the Cologne native moved to Würzburg, for whom he only played three league games and missed the rest of the season due to a serious knee injury. Hartwich decided to undergo rehabilitation in his hometown in the Rhineland, which he has now successfully completed and is ready for action again. “I am happy that I can make my comeback after my long injury break at a club where I felt so comfortable and where I know the people and know that I will have good conditions. It’s also a great challenge to play internationally. I’m also looking forward to working with Olivier Foucart again,” says Hartwig. (red)
