Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – WhatsApp has just launched a new feature that allows users to join group video calls even if the call has already started. Unfortunately, this new feature is a potential threat in the form of eavesdropping.
As Kaspersky’s Lead Security Researcher Victor Chebyshev says that from a security point of view the ability to join an ongoing group video call increases the risk of eavesdropping. According to him, in general, if the attackers were in the WhatsApp group, it would not be difficult for them to connect to the call.
“The attackers just have to wait until most of the participants have joined and then hope they can participate without being noticed. Attackers also don’t have to sit too long waiting for the call to start, because they can connect at any time,” he said from an official statement, Saturday (24/7). /2021).
What needs to be noted is that group members, especially admins, must ensure and track that no one outside the group joins. In addition, the messenger application itself guarantees the privacy of data exchange in groups through the use of end-to-end encryption.
As such, neither the app itself, nor the people trying to launch a man-in-the-middle attack, will be able to intercept group correspondence or calls, including group calls.
He also explained that until recently, most of the malicious software focused on intercepting WhatsApp messages and archived online chats. Meanwhile, his party has not found any cases related to wiretapping of any calls, especially group calls.
“Nevertheless, if the device is infected, it is very likely that the Trojan will have the ability to record the microphone and camera on the device – thus allowing an attacker to eavesdrop on any conversation, regardless of the communication channel used, be it instant messenger or regular calls on mobile phones.” he concluded.
