Harianjogja.om, JAKARTA – Fatty liver, especially non-alcoholic, often has no symptoms until the condition develops more seriously. However, there are a number of signs that can be warning signs of this disease.
Fatty liver disease is a general term for a condition characterized by the accumulation of fat in the liver. Accumulation of fat in the liver can be caused by alcohol or not related to alcohol. Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is more difficult to explain, both in terms of its causes and symptoms. This makes it very difficult to diagnose.
Launching Express UK, Friday (9/4/2021), research published in the journal Gastroenterology & Hepatology says NAFLD only tends to produce nonspecific symptoms as the condition progresses.
According to research, nonspecific symptoms can appear if the condition progresses to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), a type of NAFLD. If you have NASH, you experience inflammation and damage to liver cells, along with fat in the liver.
According to research, non-specific symptoms include right-sided abdominal pain, fatigue, and malaise. Other signs include unexplained weight loss and feeling weak.
“If it’s cirrhosis [stadium paling lanjut] progress, you can get more severe symptoms, such as yellowing of the skin and the whites of the eyes [ikterus], itchy skin, and swelling in the legs, ankles or stomach [edema]”Wrote the NHS added.
According to the NHS, NAFLD is often diagnosed after a blood test called a liver function test produces abnormal results and is not due to other liver conditions such as hepatitis.
However, as the health agency explains, blood tests do not always show NAFLD results. The diagnosis of NAFLD can also be made via ultrasonography.
Meanwhile, experts don’t know exactly why some people experience fat buildup in the liver. Likewise, there is limited understanding of why some fatty liver develops inflammation leading to cirrhosis.
