Beware of Widening War, NATO Warships Close to Russia

Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Three North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) warships landed in Finland, Monday (25/4/2022). The ships are scheduled to conduct joint war games this week in the country which shares a 1,300 kilometers (km) land border with Russia.

Collect ReutersThe warships, among others, came from Latvia, LVNS Virsaitis, from Estonia, ENS Sakala, and from the Netherlands, HNLMS Schiedam. Finland itself will send two warships in the exercise.

Practice will start on April 28. The plan is to do this for two days.

“Will prepare Finnish ships to take part in the NATO response force in 2022 … working within a multinational framework”, the Finnish Defense Forces statement said, quoted Tuesday.

Please note, Finland is not a NATO country. Since NATO was founded in 1949, the country has avoided joining so as not to expand the Cold War (Cold War).

However, Helsinki is considering joining the alliance since rising tensions with Russia over a military offensive into Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin’s government has attacked Ukraine since February 24 until now.

Finnish Prime Minister Sanna Marin said April 13 that a final decision would be made in a few weeks. Apart from Finland, Sweden has also expressed a desire to join NATO.

Previously, Finland and Sweden’s desire to join NATO had angered Russia. To Russia-24as quoted BBCRussian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said she had issued all warnings, both publicly and through bilateral channels.

“They (Sweden and Finland) know about it. They need not be surprised, they are told about everything, what will happen,” he stressed.

Russia also briefly touched on nuclear development in the Baltic with Finland and Sweden’s plans to join NATO. The country stressed that it is not surprising that nuclear weapons will be in abundance near these countries.
