Beware of Symptoms of Unusual High Cholesterol, These Are the Complaints You Experience

Jakarta – High cholesterol is often not realized by sufferers. Even though this condition is very dangerous because it can trigger serious complications, such as stroke and heart disease.

High cholesterol is a condition when cholesterol levels in the blood exceed normal limits. Cholesterol comes from two sources, namely food and the liver. Basically, the body needs cholesterol to carry out several body functions.

Cholesterol is divided into two types, namely bad cholesterol or Low Density Lipoprotein (LDL) and good cholesterol or High Density Lipoprotein (HDL).

LDL itself works by accumulating cholesterol in the blood vessels so that it can trigger serious complications. That’s why this type of cholesterol is often called ‘bad’ cholesterol. While HDL is in charge of cleaning and removing LDL out towards the liver (liver).

High cholesterol generally does not cause significant symptoms. It’s just that the buildup of plaque in several parts of the body due to cholesterol can cause health complaints.

Launch detikHealth, Dr. Joseph Ambani from GlowBar said there are several ‘unusual’ signs that can indicate high cholesterol. One of them is memory loss.

“High cholesterol is a common condition that has a variety of symptoms,” he told Express.co.uk.

Dr. Joseph also said that difficulty concentrating is also a symptom of high cholesterol. His statement is supported by a number of studies.

One study, published in Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology: Journal of the American Heart Association in 2008, concluded that those with lower levels of HDL, or ‘good’ cholesterol, were more likely to have poor memories.

Specifically, a trial of 3,673 participants found that at age 60, these men and women were 53 percent more likely to experience memory loss than those with higher levels of memory.

Archana Singh-Manoux, lead author of the study, said having memory problems was key in the diagnosis of dementia.

“We found that low low-density lipoprotein (HDL) levels may be a risk factor for memory loss in midlife. This suggests that low HDL cholesterol may also be a risk factor for dementia.”

To note, low-density lipoprotein LDL is bad cholesterol that accumulates in the walls of blood vessels. Over time this causes the inside of the vessel to narrow, causing problems.

A separate study from the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society also found something similar. According to the study, someone who has LDL cholesterol in high levels can affect memory.

“Higher plasma low density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol is associated with poorer working memory task performance and reduced task-associated default mode networks,” the study added.

“These findings demonstrate an adverse effect of increasing LDL-C on task performance of working memory and suppression of task-related DMN in older adults with cardiovascular risk.”
