Beware of solar radiation on the skin

Humans need exposure to sunlight to get vitamin D which is beneficial for bone health and boosts immunity.

But getting excessive sun exposure can result sunburn which risks causing skin burns.

Dermatologist Dr. Srie Prihianti, SpKK (K), PhD, FINSDV, FAADV explained that solar radiation consists of ultraviolet (UV) rays of various wavelengths.

“As much as 95 percent of UV rays that reach the earth are divided into several wavelengths. Namely ultraviolet A or UVA with a wavelength between 320-340 nanometers (nm). There is also Long UVA with a wavelength of 340-400 nm and in this range there are Ultra-Long UVA between 380-400 nm,” he told reporters in Surabaya, Thursday.

According to him, 30 percent of UVA rays are Ultra-Long UVA which penetrates the skin to the deepest layers and is one of the main causes of skin aging (skin-aging).

In addition, Dr. Srie emphasized, solar radiation also contains ultraviolet B or UVB rays with a wavelength between 280-320 nm which has a dangerous impact because it causes sunburn.sunburn).

“But the fact is that UVB only represents 5 percent of UV exposure,” he said.

For Dr Srie, what needs to be watched out for is the impact of exposure to Ultra-Long UVA, it can even have a risk of pigmentation and skin cancer.

Luckily, there are now many sunscreen products in the form of lotions, gels, foams and so on which function to protect the skin from the various dangers of solar radiation.

However, Dr. Srie revealed that most of the organic UV filters in sunscreen products currently in circulation only protect from UVA wavelengths up to 360nm, so they are less absorbent in the range of 380-400 nm which are classified as Ultra-Long UVA.

Not long ago, the skin care company “La Roche Posay” from the L’Oréal Group introduced the sunscreen product “Anthelios UVMUNE 400”, which is said to use the latest UV filter technology ingredient “Mexoryl 400”, to optimally protect the skin from harmful Ultra-Rain rays. Long UVA.

Scientific Communication Director of La Roche Posay International Ann’Laure Demessant through a written statement explained that the development of the UV filter ingredient Mexoryl 400 was the result of 10 years of research with 65 studies, and was the subject of 6 scientific publications.

“We have answered a real scientific challenge by creating the innovative Mexoryl 400 UV filter technology in the Anthelios UVMUNE 400 product which is able to provide the widest spectrum filtering and protect the skin against Ultra-Long UVA 380-400nm,” he said.

Head of Marketing Active Cosmetics Division L’Oréal Indonesia Nestya Sedayu said that the product Anthelios UVMUNE 400 has been clinically tested to protect the skin from exposure to UV rays which can cause pigmentation, skin-aging such as loss of skin elasticity and the appearance of wrinkles.

“We are proud to introduce Anthelios UVMUNE 400 which can protect the skin even from harmful Ultra-Long UVA rays to our consumers in Indonesia,” he said.
