Beware of Scams: Elderly Woman Falls Victim to Messenger Service Scam

On Thursday (October 12th), an 81-year-old woman from Kaarst became the victim of a scam via a messenger service at around 2:54 p.m.

Her daughter apparently sent her a message on her cell phone. It included a request to pay an invoice for the daughter, and the IBAN to which the transfer should go was also stated in the chat.

The 81-year-old complied with this request and transferred a low four-digit amount.

Criminal Investigation Department 23 has taken over the investigation.

Messages with a clearly fraudulent background are currently occurring again and again. In general, you should be aware of the fact that a healthy level of suspicion is advisable if urgent demands for money are made to you out of the blue – even if they are from supposedly acquaintances! Under no circumstances should you accept requests for money via text messages – or even on the phone. Contact the supposedly requesting relatives using the traditional methods you know and convince yourself that the request is correct.
