In an interview with Gazeta.Ru, the expert, Dr. Olga Lushnikova, a specialist in internal medicine and a Russian nutritionist, warned that despite the benefits of radish, it is not recommended for those who suffer from problems in the digestive system to eat it because it increases the formation of gases and diarrhea.

And she says, “People who suffer from digestive problems, especially in the period of exacerbation: gastritis, enteritis, stomach ulcers, duodenal ulcers, pancreatitis, irritable bowel syndrome, Crohn’s disease, and others, should exclude radishes from their diet,” according to what was reported by Russian media. .

And she adds: Radish contains a large amount of dietary fiber (pectin, hemicellulose, cellulose) that can lead to increased gas formation, flatulence, and stool disorders, which leads to exacerbation of inflammatory diseases in the digestive system.

She says, “In addition, radishes contain glucosinolates that, when exposed to mechanical stimuli – the chewing process, for example, decompose into isothiocyanates, which irritate the gastrointestinal mucosa, causing abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting and diarrhea.”

And she adds: The other reason for refraining from eating radishes when digestive diseases worsen is that it contains a high percentage of volatile oils (sulfoxides) that stimulate the secretion of gastric juice and hydrochloric acid, which leads to an exacerbation of the condition of a person suffering from stomach ulcers.
