Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Council (BMKG extension) issued an early warning high wave which has potential in a number of Indonesian waters on 28-29 December 2022. BMKG revealed the potential for high waves reaching as high as 6 metres.

“The highest wind speeds were observed in the North Natuna Sea, Java Sea, South Java waters, Flores Sea, Banda Sea, Sermata-Kep Islands waters. Tanimbar and the Sea of Arafuru,” wrote the BMKG’s Legal and Organizational Department. Relations Division in a statement, Tuesday (12/27/2022).

Meanwhile, very high waves that can reach 4-6 meters have a chance to occur in the southern Indian Ocean of Banten-Central Java and in the central and eastern parts of the Arafuru Sea.

For this reason it is necessary to pay attention to the high risks for navigational safety such as fishing vessels (wind speed greater than 15 knots and wave height greater than 1.25 meters), barges (wind speed greater than 16 knots and wave height greater than 1.5 meters), ferries (wind speed greater than 21 knots and wave height greater than 2.5 meters), large vessels such as cargo ships/cruise ships (wind speed greater than 27 knots and wave height waves greater than 4.0 meters).

“We are asking people who live and do business on the coast around areas where high waves are likely to occur to remain vigilant,” the BMKG added.
