Beware of New COVID-19 Vaccine Scam: Ministry of Health Impersonation Email

The Civil Guard and the National Cybersecurity Institute (Incibe) warn of a new scam. A fraudulent email campaign (phishing) has been detected that attempts to impersonate the Ministry of Health. The email informs the user that they have been selected to receive an additional dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and also with the possibility of choosing the brand of the vaccine. To do this, you simply have to download a document by clicking on a link provided in the email itself. However, this link downloads a .zip file that contains a malicious file.

From Incibe they point out that if you have received an email with these characteristics and you have followed the instructions contained therein, a malicious file will have been downloaded and executed on the device, therefore, you must proceed to disinfect it following the guidelines specified in this content. «Device disinfection».

From Incibe they offer some recommendations to avoid being scammed:

-Do not open emails from unknown or unsolicited users, delete them directly.

-Do not respond to these emails under any circumstances, nor send personal information.

-Be careful when clicking on links and downloading attachments in emails, SMS, messages on WhatsApp or on social networks, even if they are from known contacts.

-Always have the operating system and antivirus updated.

-In case of doubt, consult directly with the company or service involved or with trusted third parties such as the State Security Forces and Corps (FCSE) or the Internet User Security Office (OSI).

The fraudulent email is sent from an address that does not belong to the official domain corresponding to the Ministry of Health and with the subject ‘We have an urgent announcement about the extra dose of vaccine!’, although it is not ruled out that other emails may be being sent with other similar or even different issues.

The content of the message informs the user that they have been selected to receive an additional dose of COVID-19 vaccine in the coming days. In addition, you will supposedly be able to choose its manufacturer. Finally, you are invited to click on different links to see additional instructions or how to request the dose brand.

The message is characterized by:

-It is identified by the logo of the Ministry of Health

-It does not contain spelling or writing errors, which makes it even more credible.

-They use the email address to address the victim, instead of the first and last name.
