The finding of 3 cases of death suspected to be ‘mysterious’ acute hepatitis was also highlighted by the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (IDAI). Some of the symptoms to watch out for include nausea and vomiting and jaundice.
General Chairperson of the Central Board of the Indonesian Pediatrician Association (PP IDAI), Dr. Piprim Basarah Yanuarso, SpA(K) asked members and resident (prospective specialists) pediatricians to be aware of the following symptoms:
- Changes in the color of urine (dark) and/or stool (pale)
- Yellow
- Itching
- Joint pain or aches
- High fever
- Nauseous vomit
- Stomach pain
- Lethargy and or loss of appetite
- Diarrhea
- Seizures
Laboratory tests to watch out for are Serum Aspartate transaminase (AST) / SGOT or Alanine transaminase (ALT) / SGPT more than 500 U/L. In addition, the examination did not find Hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E.
Regarding vigilance, Dr. Piprim conveyed a number of appeals:
- Washing hands
- Drink clean, mature water
- Eat clean and fully cooked food
- Dispose of feces and or disposable diapers in place
- Using your own cutlery
- Wear a mask and keep your distance
- In order to detect early if you find children with symptoms such as jaundice, nausea/vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, decreased consciousness/seizures, lethargy, high fever, check with the nearest health service facility.
