Fatty liver is a general term for a condition characterized by the accumulation of liver fat. Accumulation of fat in the liver can be caused by alcohol or not related to alcohol. Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is more difficult to explain, both in terms of causes and symptoms. This makes it very difficult to diagnose.

If you have NASH, you experience inflammation and damage to liver cells along with fat in the liver. According to research, non-specific symptoms include right-sided abdominal pain, fatigue, and weakness. Other signs include unexplained weight loss and feeling weak.

“If cirrhosis (the most advanced stage) develops, symptoms can be more severe, such as yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes (jaundice), itchy skin, and swelling in the legs, ankles or stomach (edema),” writes the UK’s National Health Service ( NHS).

According to the NHS, NAFLD is often diagnosed after a blood test called a liver function test produces abnormal results and is not due to another liver condition such as hepatitis. However, as the health agency explains, blood tests do not always show NAFLD results. The diagnosis of NAFLD can also be made via ultrasonography.

Meanwhile, experts don’t know exactly why some people experience congestion fat liver. Similarly there is a limited understanding of why some fatty liver develops inflammation that becomes cirrhosis.
