Beware of Fake Migros Competition on Facebook: Phishing for User Data

Several Facebook pages are currently advertising an alleged Migros competition. This is an attempt to phish user data.

“Today the Migros team is giving away 500 CHF vouchers to the first 250 people who have a different number than [803] know”, it is currently said in various Facebook posts. The catch: the competition is a fake and is being distributed by fraudulent sites with a stolen Migros look. As the research network “Correctiv.org” reports, the alleged competition is being used by accounts spread, which use the name “Migros Fans” in different spellings, sometimes with a period at the end.

These pages were created immediately before the competition was posted and have neither an imprint nor a blue “Verified” tick like the official Migros page.

The fraudulent sites themselves use an orange “M” as their profile picture, analogous to that of the real Migros. In the competition, on the other hand, the lettering “MiGROS” is used as the logo. This is the logo of Migros Türk, a retail chain in Turkey that has been independent of the Swiss group since 1974.

According to Migros Switzerland, it is clearly a fake competition. The company is pursuing the case legally.

Find the numbers and give your dates

In the lottery, you should find the numbers within a number grid that deviate from the norm and comment on them. The operator of the page then asks the commenting person to like the post.

You will then receive a private message. According to “Correctiv.org”, an attempt is then made to elicit his or her personal data from the alleged winner.

Not all phishers approach their potential victims so bluntly, as a collection of examples from the NCSC shows, which you can read here.
