Venson Automotive Solutions expert Gil Kelly explained, gas lighters exploded due to heat in the car cabin may occur.

Kelly explains basically when parked in direct sunlight, the car cabin is like a greenhouse.

It said it only took 10 minutes for the cabin temperature to rise to dangerous levels. In addition to gas lighters, other dangerous objects that are at risk of exploding in the car cabin are aerosol cans, cans of fizzy drinks, and batteries.

“Some drivers take the risk of transporting flammable items including gasoline in containers, increasing the risk of spontaneous combustion,” he said.

The Sun reports that a gas lighter can explode when the temperature soars to over 30°C, while the temperature inside the car when it basks can be as high as 60°C.

When exposed to high temperatures, the gas pressure inside the lighter will increase and at a certain hot point it can explode.

According to the Head of Product Improvement of Astra Daihatsu Motor (ADM) Bambang Supriyadi. It’s a good idea every driver or passenger understands what they’re bringing before they’re left in the cabin.

“Gas lighters and even bottled air fresheners can indeed cause fires when in hot conditions, especially if they are positioned directly under the glass. The potential for explosion will be even greater. Like some bottles of air freshener, there are words like no [boleh] exposed to heat or burned,” said Bambang.
