- Difficulty concentrating
- Finds it difficult to carry out daily activities, such as being distracted when paying for groceries at the checkout
- Difficulty following conversations or finding the right words
- Confusion about time and place

These symptoms are often mild and can only worsen gradually. The symptoms are often called “mild cognitive impairment” (MCI) because the symptoms are not severe enough to be diagnosed as dementia. There is no single test that can confirm a diagnosis of dementia. If a person shows symptoms, the doctor will use a variety of tests and other tests, including:

- Physical examination
- Laboratory tests, including blood tests
- Overview of symptoms, including changes in memory, behavior and brain function
- Family history
