Surabaya – Ahead of the change of season, the immune system tends to be more vulnerable and weak. Complaints that are usually experienced are fever, chills or in medical terms the common cold, a viral infection occurs when the body’s immunity decreases.
Usually children who are susceptible to disease. They are prone to diarrhea, digestive tract to fever.
General Practitioner General Practitioner of Emergency Room at PHC Hospital Surabaya, Dr. Pratitis Amalia said that in a day there are always patients with diarrhea-gastrointestinal complaints who come to the emergency room at PHC Hospital. For the children themselves, about one to three children enter the emergency room per day.
“Yes, there are quite a lot (patients who come), especially children with cases of diarrhea. In children there is also rotavirus (a viral infection that causes inflammation in the digestive tract). Most are children (rotavirus), adults are very rare and almost never, because adults already have better body defenses while children are more susceptible. The symptoms are the same, as usual diarrhea,” said Dr. Amalia when contacted detikJatimThursday (9/2/2023).
Bacteria also vary, such as Escherichia coli or E. coli which are most common and usually come from unclean water. Another factor is cleanliness, for example after being exposed to rain, hands come into contact with stagnant water and so on, then they don’t immediately wash their hands thoroughly, especially putting food in, holding things, then contacting them with their mouths.
“Most diarrhea occurs during the rainy season, in Indonesia sometimes there are floods, puddles and lots of pollution mixed in which can carry bacteria,” he said.

Another factor is cleanliness, for example after being exposed to rain, hands come into contact with stagnant water and so on, then they don’t immediately wash their hands thoroughly, especially putting food in, holding things, then contacting them with their mouths.
“It does enter through the mouth, but not directly by hand through the mouth, it can be food or items that are held and contact with the mouth, so that it enters the digestive tract and digestive infections occur, the most common symptoms of which are diarrhea, nausea, vomiting. Diarrhea is related to hygiene factors, usually if it rains it’s easier to transmit germs and bacteria,” he explained.
However, children are more susceptible to disease than adults. Because children, especially toddlers there are several triggering factors. Like the oral phase or often putting objects in the mouth.
“From holding dirty items, being able to hold toys, sucking on objects so that it becomes a route for germs and bacteria to enter the digestive tract. Usually when it comes to children because of the oral phase, children cannot maintain their own hygiene. That’s why it’s more It happens a lot in kids,” he said.
Apart from toddlers, elementary school children are also vulnerable. The factor of the disease could be when eating snacks outside of school where the hygiene cannot be ascertained. Then children also sometimes forget to wash their hands before or after eating, germs and E. coli bacteria can enter the mouth, enter the digestive tract so that these symptoms appear, especially diarrhea.
There are three tips and ways to prevent diarrhea, indigestion, and fever. Especially for the baby.
1. Prevention starts with maintaining cleanliness, washing hands, when feeding children too and getting children to wash their hands before eating.
2. In toddlers especially, when they still often put objects in their mouths under the supervision of their parents. Do not let dirty things enter your mouth because they can carry germs and bacteria.
3. If a child is sick, parents should be aware of signs of dehydration. Because the gravity of diarrhea in children is dehydration. If a child has diarrhea in large quantities, brown eyes, weakness, lethargy, decreased urination, this is a sign of dehydration and needs to be taken to the doctor.
