Beware of Dengue Shock Syndrome, Complications of DHF which can be fatal

In the rainy season, Indonesian people need to be aware of transmission dengue fever.

Dengue fever or DHF itself is a disease viral infection transmitted through mosquito bites Aedes aegypti. Mosquito it breeds well during the rainy season.

Although many cases of DHF can be cured, people still need to be aware of possible complications dengue shock syndrome which can cause death.

DHF itself is known to appear in several stages. Stages I and II will generally only show mild-moderate flu-like symptoms.

Here are some common symptoms of DHF, citing the World Health Organization website (WHO):

– headache;
– pain behind the eye;
– muscle and joint pain;
– nausea and vomiting;
– swelling of the glands;
– high fever;
– rash.

However, in stages III and IV, DHF will begin to show worse symptoms. This condition is known as dengue shock syndrome.

WHO itself categorizes DHF patients who are in critical condition. During the 24-48 hour critical phase, some patients may show a sudden decrease in symptoms. It is at this point, when the fever begins to drop, that the warning signs of worse dengue can manifest.

Dengue shock syndrome is a complication of dengue fever that can be fatal and cause death. Complications trigger plasma leakage, fluid accumulation, respiratory problems, severe bleeding, and organ damage.

Here are some warning signs to watch out for:

– severe stomach pain;
– persistent vomiting;
– rapid breathing;
– bleeding gums or nose;
– restless, tired;
– enlargement of the liver;
– the appearance of blood in the vomit, urine, and feces.

In terms of laboratory tests, dengue shock syndrome can also be characterized by a platelet count of less than 100,000/mm3.

How to Prevent Dengue Shock Syndrome

Dengue shock syndrome itself is difficult to predict. There are no specific risk factors that make a person potentially experience complications when exposed to DHF.

For that, the only thing you can do is take precautions. Preventing the spread of dengue can keep you from being threatened dengue shock syndrome.

You can prevent dengue mosquito bites in several ways, such as the following.

– use anti-mosquito lotion;
– planting mosquito repellent plants;
– wear long clothes, especially in the morning and evening because of mosquitoes Aedes aegypti usually active at that time;
– install gauze wire in the ventilation holes;
– eradicate mosquito larvae;
– drain and clean water reservoirs regularly;
– closing containers and puddles;
– Avoid storing items that are not used.
