Beware of Complications in Thalassemia Patients

Jakarta, Beritasatu.com– Disease Thalassemia Major is a blood disorder that is inherited from one or both parents. This disease still has no cure and cannot be underestimated, because it can cause complications ranging from heart failure, stunted growth and development, liver and kidney disorders to death.

Consultant Hematology-Oncology Child Sri Mulatsih said Thalassemia disease makes sufferers experience anemia or lack of blood. This is something to watch out for because it can cause complications.

“Treatment given to Thalassemia survivors can be done with blood transfusions and regular iron chelation to increase hope and better quality of life,” said dr. Sri on the sidelines of a virtual webinar of PT Kalbe Farma Tbk (Kalbe) in the context of World Thalassemia Day Saturday (29/5/2021).

Director of Prevention and Control of Non-Communicable Diseases at the Ministry of Health Cut Putri Arianie said Thalassemia was a problem that needed special attention. For families who have children with thalassemia, the psychological and economic impacts are quite heavy.

“Because, you have to see your child do blood transfusions for life with a fairly large cost because not all health facilities support blood transfusions and also the distance between health facilities and homes for people with thalassemia which sometimes requires quite a long journey,” he added.

Cut Putri added that in dealing with Thalassemia, the government has implemented three pillars, namely health promotion, early detection, and special treatment.

Meanwhile, Marketing Director Pharma of PT Kalbe Farma Tbk Ridwan Ong added that the event, which is a collaboration between Kalbe and the Association of Indonesian Thalassemia Parents (POPTI), the Indonesian Thalassemia Foundation (YTI) and the Indonesian Thalassemia Association (PPTI) provided education on the management of Thalassemia and was attended by hundreds of sufferers and observers of Thalassemia from all over Indonesia.

“Kalbe will continue to show its commitment to supporting public health for a better life, especially in rare diseases (rare disease) where one of them is Thalassemia,” said Ridwan.
