Unfortunately, an ugly pattern repeats itself with iron regularity in Czech stores. When a country sells out its food reserves, Czech traders are one of the few who speak up and simply buy out old goods that are being replaced by new ones. They then thaw it and offer it to Czech customers.
Problematic butter
It is especially baked in the case of butter, which has long been one of the best-selling foods in the country. In short, it belongs to the local kitchen and people buy it very often, practically every purchase. Naturally, they are looking for the best deals, especially when prices fluctuate a lot and butter can be really expensive in some seasons.
People are then happy when they come across butter with a discounted price at first glance. They are understandably well educated, so they know that you can’t just call something butter. They take it in such a way that it doesn’t really matter what kind they buy, since they are all plus or minus the same.
But that is not the case at all. “Beware of cheap imported butters, where there is a higher probability that such a product was also stored in freezers,” food expert Michaela Smolková informed customers in the Blesk newspaper.
You will really feel it
It is from abroad that butter is imported to us, which is taken out of the freezer boxes of state reserves, after approximately a year to a year and a half of storage. During this period, it must be replaced with a fresher one. However, old butter can still be sold.
Yes, traders here are playing on ignorance of the market. They do not draw attention to the origin, but declare it only as a favorable offer. But if you compare such a product with fresh butter, which must be consumed within 20 days from the product date, it is logical that you are comparing two completely different products.

That discounted imported butter can only be referred to as table butter. This can be frozen and sold within two years from the date of manufacture. In theory, it should retain its properties, but in practice it very often loses them. Here we observe the processes of oxidation and rancidity. The given butter also does not taste as good and may no longer have the appropriate parameters of nutritional values.
