“Beware of Chaos: Mahfud Md Warns Against Interfering with Election Schedule”

Jakarta

Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal and Security Affairs Mahfud Md reminded all parties not to mess with the general election schedule (election). Mahfud said there was the potential for chaos to arise if the election did not take place on schedule or was postponed.

“That’s why I said earlier, don’t mess with the election schedule. Don’t play games. It invites chaos. If you want to force the election, it’s postponed,” said Mahfud Md in his speech at the LPOI national awareness event at the Royal Kuningan Hotel, South Jakarta, Saturday (25/3/2023).

Mahfud said there were those who said the position of temporary president could be filled by the Minister of Home Affairs (Mendagri), Minister of Foreign Affairs (Menlu) and Minister of Defense (Menhan) if a new president had not been elected. Mahfud said that this could not happen because the tenure of the Minister of Home Affairs, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Defense would end with the president who appointed them.

“Some say, sir, if the president ends his term of office, there is a triumvirate, namely the Minister of Home Affairs, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Minister of Defense who become president together until a new president is elected. It cannot. That Minister of Home Affairs, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Minister of Defense ends his term of office with the president who lift,” he said.

Then, Mahfud said that keeping the elections in 2024 would be a joint task.

“Brothers and sisters, one of our tasks in matters of nationality is to deepen the basic philosophical issues here. But our short-term task is to ensure that the 2024 election goes according to schedule,” he said.

As previously reported, the Central Jakarta District Court (PN Jakpus) has confronted the KPU through an appeals mechanism to postpone the election. On the other hand, the parliament and the government are continuing the stages of the 2024 election.

The KPU officially filed an appeal against the Central Jakarta District Court decision, Friday (10/3). The KPU came to the Central Jakarta District Court with a memorandum of appeal for postponing the election.

“Then we submitted the documents and we received the deed of appeal, so that the KPU has conveyed in its entirety the processes or substance of the appeal documents,” said the Head of the Indonesian KPU Advocacy and Dispute Resolution Bureau, Andi Krisna.
