Vitamins have an important role for the body, including vitamin D. However, you need to be aware of the dangers of excess vitamin D which can cause side effects.
One of the side effects that can be caused by excessive intake of vitamin D is ataxia, as a neurological disorder.
A neurologist who is also the chairman of the Central Jakarta branch of the Indonesian Doctors Association, Haznim Fadhli, said that although it is relatively rare, ataxia due to excess vitamin D needs to be watched out for.
Toxicity or toxins that arise due to excess vitamin D usually occurs in those who take supplements, not vegetables or fruits.
“From foods such as fruits and vegetables or sunlight, there are rarely side effects. When we take supplements, we actually also get vitamin D from the food and vegetables we eat, so we can have excess,” he said.
Ataxia, said Haznim, is a neurological disorder that makes it difficult for sufferers to control their own body movements. This condition usually makes it difficult for a person to speak, move his eyes, walk or pick up certain objects.
“Usually this happens suddenly because there is a problem with the brain and the balance and coordination system in the body,” he said.
For this reason, if ataxia is detected as a result of excess vitamin D intake, it is recommended that you correct the amount of vitamin D intake.
For example, said Haznim, instead of absorbing vitamin D for the body through supplements, it’s better if you get it from vegetables and fruit. In addition to being healthier, this can also minimize the body’s excess vitamin D.
In addition to ataxia, the danger of excess vitamin D can also trigger a number of other nervous disorders such as impaired concentration, confusion, apathy, to coma.
