Beware of Airbnb Scam: A Landlord’s Troubling Experience with Fake Profiles and Unwanted Guests

STRØMMEN (Nettavisen): We meet “Ali” (Nettavisen knows his full name) outside the house at Strømmen, just east of Oslo. Ali works on a daily basis with accounting. Six months ago he bought a 3-room flat in Lillestrøm to rent it out.

During the period, he has rented out the apartment a number of times, for as little as two days. A few days ago a new inquiry came.

– The request was from Monday 7 August to Thursday 10 August. I accepted it because I saw the review for this profile. There were three reviews and all were good. “Cozy guests”, “good guests”, and so on.

– Then I put it out for the three days, because it was then free. It was what she who made the request needed, he says to Nettavisen.

Verified

Ali says he trusted Airbnb, the identification was verified. Then he assumed that it would go well. They then arranged a meeting at 1.30pm on Monday this week. Ali had been waiting half an hour when the doorbell rang.

– An hour before she called and said she was at Drammen train station and that she would be at my place in an hour.

That day it rained a lot.

– But when she came, she wasn’t wet. I think she had just gotten out of a car. Had she walked from the train station to the apartment, she might have spent 15 minutes and been very wet, says Ali.

At the entrance, he meets a lady of Asian appearance, approx. 40-45 years old with a girl whom she presented as her 13-year-old daughter. Ali responded that the girl was blonde.

Weird stomach feeling

– I thought it could happen, but got a strange gut feeling that it wasn’t her daughter. The daughter seemed older, but the woman said that the 13-year-old daughter was looking forward to exploring Lillestrøm.

– I showed them the flat, explained the rules, and said that we would see each other on Thursday. If there was anything, all you had to do was get in touch.

When Ali went outside, he texted a neighbor asking him to contact him if he saw anything suspicious. The neighbor did so after three or four hours. The neighbor explains that there is a lot of activity in and out of the apartment. He sees two ladies with two men.

Older men

– I thought the 13-year-old girl had been visited. But no, there are older men who may be from Russia or Ukraine.

Then Ali and his brother go down to the apartment and see who comes in and out. After 15 minutes, a man arrives and rings the phone at the main entrance.

– Then we see a lady we have never seen. After approx. ten minutes my brother and I try to enter the apartment. We knock, no one opens. After a few minutes I take out the key and open the door. There we meet a little girl aged 18-20 whom I have never seen.

– Why don’t you open the door, who are you? I ask. But Ali gets no answer.

– Then I go into the apartment. I don’t see anyone in the living room and not in the one room we have. Then I go into the other room. There is a man and a woman who are naked, says Ali. He thinks he has to film this.

Here you can see the video:

video-description"> The landlord is very surprised when he sees who is in the apartment.

Very scared

– How did they react then?

– They were very frightened. The man tried to put on his clothes in case the police came. I asked the one who had just had sex to stay there until he was told to leave the apartment. He listened to that, but was very nervous.

Ali says he spoke English but was from Russia. Ali then asks the girl who she is, where she is from, and where is she that he rented out to. According to Ali, the girl seemed both frightened and shocked and eventually says that she does not know. He was given the key to the apartment, and then the unwelcome guests left.

Ali then walks around the apartment to see if he has lost anything.

Condoms everywhere

– Then I see condoms everywhere and lubricant. There had already been several customers and girls there. The two girls who were there had just arrived. When I got the message from the neighbour, there were two other girls in the flat, he says.

Ali suspects that some girls are sitting in a car outside the apartment. When the girls are ordered, they enter the apartment. Then some other girls come in when they finish.

– Have you subsequently checked more closely with the woman you rented out to?

– I have called several times, but she does not answer. I have also texted her and asked about a laptop that disappeared, but she won’t say anything about this.

– However, she wrote that if I go to the police about this, she will say that I threatened her to have sex in the apartment. She will also say that I am her pimp.

Nettavisen knows the identity of the person concerned. We have been in contact with her via SMS and asked about the purpose of the rental stay, the activities, and whether she has anything to hide. She won’t answer. This is therefore “Ali’s” version of the case that is reproduced. When asked if he thinks she has someone behind her again, Ali replies:

Not the same person

– Yes. I suspect the person at Airbnb is not the same person I gave the keys to. This person has had no contact with the girls who were in the apartment.

Ali says his brother checked a website for escort services when they were outside the apartment before going inside. He wanted to see if he could find out anything about the girls who were in the apartment.

– Then we looked up the girls who were registered in Viken. Suddenly we see an advertisement where we see that they are available in Lillestrøm from 7 August to 10 August. Then we assumed it was them.

– We texted “Hey, are you busy”? Then they sent the address to my apartment in Lillestrøm. Then they said something about the prices. Sex costs NOK 2,000 for an hour, NOK 1,500 for half an hour, NOK 1,000 for ten minutes, says Ali, and shows Nettavisen the text message.

Fear of prosecution

Ali does not dare to contact the police in case he is indicted or charged. Neighbors will not be involved either. As long as it went well, he doesn’t think it’s necessary.

– They behaved well, but there is something about sex that is not acceptable. No vandalism has been done.

– So I had a laptop which is gone, but I don’t know who took it. I searched the girls but found nothing. The laptop may have ended up in a car right outside, which drove the girls away.

Ali has contacted Airbnb. They have asked him to send a claim for the stolen laptop. He has received NOK 2,400 for the rental itself for the three days.

Don’t trust the reviews

– What advice would you now give to others who are renting out via Airbnb?

– People should not trust the reviews. The profile may be borrowed. I have informed Airbnb that the profile has been trafficked, but they have not blocked it.

– Now I’m going to take a lot more care and maybe not rent out to just anyone. Trust is simply weakened, says a thoughtful Ali.
