Be aware of the symptoms of typhus that can make the body tired. Typhoid is often found in countries in Asia, especially Indonesia. This disease caused by the bacterium Salmonella typhi can target all groups, both young and old. So, what are the symptoms of typhus that we should watch out for?
Quoted from the National Health Service (NHS UK), Typhoid fever or typhoid is a bacterial infection that can spread throughout the body and affect many organs. Without prompt treatment, typhoid can cause serious complications and can be fatal.
Typhoid is caused by a bacterium called Salmonella typhi, which is associated with cases of food poisoning.
Typhoid is a highly contagious disease. An infected person can remove the bacteria from the body through their faeces or urine.
If other people eat food or drink from contaminated water, they can become infected with the bacteria and develop typhoid.
What are the Symptoms of Typhoid?
Typhoid symptoms are usually accompanied by:
- The constant high temperature that is gradually increasing every day
- Headache
- Aches and pains
- Fatigue
- Cough
- Constipation
As the infection progresses, the patient may experience loss of appetite, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Some people may develop a rash.
If typhoid is not treated promptly, symptoms will continue to worsen over the following weeks and the risk of potentially fatal complications will continue to increase.
How is Typhoid Treatment?
If you find typhoid symptoms as previously mentioned, immediately consult a doctor. Doctors will identify this disease through laboratory tests.
Typhoid requires immediate treatment with antibiotics. If typhoid can be diagnosed early, the infection is likely to be mild and can usually be treated at home with antibiotic tablets for 7 to 14 days.
More severe typhus usually requires hospitalization in the hospital so that the patient can be given an injection of antibiotics. With prompt antibiotic treatment, most people will start to feel better within a few days and serious complications become very rare.
If typhoid is not treated immediately, it is estimated that 1 in 5 people with the condition will die. Some of those who survive will experience complications caused by the infection.
