Beware! Hackers Can Control Our Computers from Microsoft Word

Microsoft Word

Selular.ID – Hackers aka hackers can reportedly take over a user’s computer through Microsoft Office files, especially Microsoft Word.

This happened because of a vulnerability called “Follina” in the software made by Microsoft.

Technology media Digital Trends reported that the Follina vulnerability was detected in Microsoft Office versions 2013, 2016, 2019, 2021, Office ProPlus, and Office 365.

The “Follina” vulnerability was first detected on 27 May 2022.

However, according to a Digital Trends report, Microsoft itself has been aware of this vulnerability since early April.

This vulnerability also affects Rich Text Format (.rtf) files and templates in Microsoft Word.

In fact, many people believe that documents in RTF format are safer from virus attacks.

Hackers exploit this vulnerability by sending Rich Text Format (.rtf) files or Microsoft templates containing malicious programs to their targets.

This Follina vulnerability allows the malicious program to work from external sources, even if the user does not open the file or template that is sent.

Then, the malicious program takes over the user’s computer and executes a series of commands via the Microsoft Support Diagnostic Tool (MSDT).

MSDT itself is a tool that Microsoft usually uses to analyze diagnostic data and debug various user problems.

That way, hackers gain remote access via MSDT to take control of the computer.
