Not only stress, heart attacks can also be triggered by several factors such as smoking, obesity, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, to lack of physical activity.

Researchers conducted a study in 2021 on more than 900 patients with heart disease underlying it. Then, they observed how the heart conditions and blood flow to the heart in response to stress.
The results show that stress can affect blood flow to the heart. The research team explains that this reduced blood flow to the heart can eventually trigger a heart attack or cause cardiovascular-related problems.
The study participants who were known to experience mental stress were also more at risk of having a heart attack. This condition, the researchers say, proves that stress has a significant impact on heart health, and increases the risk of heart attacks and strokes in the future.
In addition, previous studies have also analyzed at least 24,000 patients in 52 countries. Researchers noted that people who experienced excessive stress were twice as likely to have a heart attack five years after the study.
However, it turns out that stress does not always have a negative meaning. For example, short-term stress can give you energy to complete tasks on deadlines.
This type of stress can also encourage a person to make decisions quickly, in life-threatening situations.
Meanwhile, in long-term (chronic) stress, it can be caused by constant worrying about work, relationship, health conditions, or economic conditions.
Some things that can emerge from chronic stress including irritability, depression, or anxiety disorders.
When left untreated, chronic stress can also cause symptoms such as:
- Stiff muscle
- Energy loss
- Insomnia
- Headache
- Stomach ache
Then, chronic stress also has the potential to make you unable to control your emotions or actions when they occur. A person who is overly stressed may experience more frequent mood swings, and feel fear.
Unfortunately, increased levels of stress hormones can cause unwanted effects, including:
- High blood pressure
- Increased inflammation Reduced blood flow to the heart
- As well as the risk of heart attack and stroke
