Beware, Bad Food and Drink Quality Triggers Diabetes to Hypertension

Suara.com – The data shows the industry food and drinks go faster than any other industry. The Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs’ Expert Staff for Connections, Edi Prio Pambudi, found that food and beverage consumption reaches 34 percent of the total consumption of daily goods.

“It could be that it is linked to 34 percent of consumption for food and beverages and it has become a lifestyle,” said Edi in a virtual discussion, Tuesday (19/1/2021)

The sad thing is that the boom in this industry is not accompanied by quality food and drinks that are good for health. The result is that the quality of food and drinks is poor but the amount of consumption has increased. this causes the prevalence of disease in Indonesia to increase.

According to Edi, this is in line with the results of Deloit’s research in 2018 which found a shift in disease during the last 10 years from diabetes and tuberculosis (TB), becoming a disease of diabetes and increasing hypertension.

This fact is quite alarming, said Edi. It could trigger a dangerous impact, namely the damage to the quality of Indonesia’s human resources (HR). The number of human resources may be large, but most of them suffer from diabetes and hypertension.

“The quality of food and beverages also needs attention. Do not let it only encourage consumption, economic growth, and the food and beverage industry, but it turns out to be susceptible to disease,” said Edi.

Furthermore, data during the Covid-19 pandemic also found that those who died due to being infected with the virus had a history of hypertension and diabetes, which worsened the symptoms of Covid-19.

“So we have to look at food and drinks, let’s say that it has become a highly dependent lifestyle but it must be accompanied by changes in the quality of food and beverages,” he concluded.
