Leg pain can reveal many health problems without us realizing, so you should pay attention to any signs that appear on this part of the body.
According to the British newspaper Express, high levels of cholesterol in the blood cause serious health problems, ranging from heart disease to strokes, so it is necessary to identify and eliminate the fatty substance. Fortunately, three warning signs can carry clues.
Leaving high levels of cholesterol in the body causes plaque to build up in the arteries. Plaque describes an unpleasant mix of fatty substances, cellular waste products, calcium, fibrin, as well as cholesterol. Once the arteries harbor too much of this dangerous mix, they become narrow and stiff. Less than ideal blood flow, leading to “first” symptoms in your legs.
A lack of blood flow to your legs can sometimes lead to a “common” condition known as peripheral artery disease, or PAD for short, reports the Cleveland Clinic.
The ‘first symptom’ of PAD is claudication, which describes muscle pain that can be identified by three telltale signs.
Dull, aching pain
From acute to chronic, pain can come in many uncomfortable forms, but the pain from claudication is usually dull and aching.
You may also feel that your muscles are tired, or you may feel a muscle spasm or cramp.
The pain increases with activity
At first, the pain caused by claudication is not constant. It only appears when you move. The more effort or activity you do, the worse the pain will feel.
Moreover, once you stop resting, the pain should stop within a few minutes, or even less, hitting the muscles, not the joints.
Another key sign of lameness is that it affects only the muscles, meaning it does not cause pain in the joints and bones.
The Cleveland Clinic adds, “If the pain is in one or more joints or persists for several minutes after stopping to rest, this is likely not intermittent claudication.”
Aside from the pain in your legs, PAD can eventually cause other symptoms, including:
Burning or aching pain in your feet and toes while you’re at rest, especially at night while lying down
redness or change in the color of your skin;
more frequent infections
Sores of the toes and feet that do not heal.
Unfortunately, PAD does not always cause many noticeable symptoms, making it difficult to recognize, just as high cholesterol does.
This means that the most reliable way to detect cholesterol levels is through a blood test.
Once your doctor confirms this condition, there’s a lot you can do to get your levels back out of the danger zone, ranging from eating a healthy diet to an anti-cholesterol medication called a statin.
A cholesterol-lowering diet focuses on reducing your intake of saturated fat, but increasing your intake of soluble fiber can also help lower your levels.
Other helpful lifestyle modifications include quitting smoking and getting more exercise.
