In the beginning, there were quickly more than 2000 viewers that Arno Schatz (59) regularly welcomed in his kitchen via Facebook. Known as the “carnival paparazzi”, the man from Beuel delights with his live video cooking show amid the pandemic.
It is gratifying to see how many positive ideas arose during the pandemic. Just think of new music or theater concepts, car concerts, the cultural garden in the Rheinaue or virtual theater pieces that the Junge Theater Bonn has broadcast on the Internet in cooperation with Bonnlive. So Schatz also had an idea how to please people, now in lockdown.

Schatz is kind of a factotum when it comes to the carnival. As a “carnival paparazzi”, he is at almost every carnival event with his camera. “When I noticed how people were cut off from the outside world during the first lockdown in March, I thought I had to give people something,” he says of the reason for his cooking show.

Schatz is a trained cook
Even if he works in the IT industry, he has not forgotten his origins. Because Schatz is a trained chef and used to cook in the first houses and even at state receptions in Bonn. And cooking is still his hobby. A smartphone and a Facebook account are enough for him to broadcast his show from the kitchen at home. “You can cook, you can chat”, Schatz said to himself at the beginning. Nothing more was necessary.

He has a lot of cookbooks in his cupboard, but he doesn’t need them – he cooks “us de Lamäng”, meaning by heart, without a recipe. And every day in the Schatz house, what he cooked before comes on the table. In the beginning he cooked whatever came to mind every weekday for four weeks. “I also cooked a lot like crazy just to give people something”.

Word of his cooking and his culinary art quickly got around in the Facebook community. Because shortly he has had more than the said 2000 viewers. His offer remains across the board: Whether it be Himmel un Äd, carnival donuts, beef roulades, quiche Lorraine, cold dog or vegetarian lasagna – everything is easy for him. “Always according to my taste, the way I and my family like it, and not according to any specifications,” says Schatz.

“I’ve already prepared something”
Since his cooking show is limited in time – “otherwise it gets boring if we have to wait hours for something” – he also has the famous sentence of the former TV chef Max Inzinger on it: “I’ve already prepared something”. “Or should people watch me chopping?” Asks Schatz. Incidentally, Alfred Biolek later adopted the sentence.

Sweetie gets up early in the morning and goes to the market for fresh ingredients. He gets meat from the butcher he trusts. “I value high-quality products, you can just taste them.” And when he cooks a broth or soup, later more eyes look out of the pot than in.

He has been asked for recipes a few times. But since he cooks by feel and taste, he has no plans to publish a cookbook. Positive reports like: “Arno, this gives us something”, he got plenty of it. And meanwhile he can also be seen on YouTube as “Koch Schatz”.
