Between high demand and shortage

In recent days, several videos have emerged on social networks showing citizens queuing in front of pharmacies due to the insufficiency of the drugs prescribed as part of the therapeutic protocol for the care of Covid patients.

This has caused concern among all sections of society that these drugs are still scarce on the market. A scenario reminiscent of the controversy around the shortage of vitamin C and Zinc, which had prompted the Ministry of Health to publish a press release to reassure citizens of their availability.

Between shortage and high demand

At a time when voices are rising on social networks, “L’Opinion” contacted Souad Moutaouakil, president of the Regional Council of Community Pharmacists of the South (CRPOS), in order to clarify matters regarding the shortage of certain drugs at the national level.

“There is no shortage of drugs, but we are facing a disruption in supply, mainly due to high demand and the upsurge in Covid-19 cases under pressure from the Delta variant which seems to be spreading like wildfire in the Kingdom, ”she said.

While regretting the fact that it is difficult to meet the pressing demand of citizens which increases with the increase in contamination, our interlocutor indicated that “many citizens are panicking to buy drugs without being sick and accept It is wrong for us to deny them the request, due to the fact that the stock is limited and is reserved for Covid-19 patients, especially for certain products that require a prescription such as Plaquenil ”.

Vitamin C and Zinc know, for their part, a strong demand, she underlined, specifying that “we must give priority to Covid patients who need it the most and who are struggling to obtain it, in particular because of that these are drugs that can be bought without a prescription ”.

Integration of pharmacists in vaccination campaigns

In addition, the president of the CRPOS urged the Ministry of Health to redouble its efforts in terms of awareness-raising concerning the respect of barrier measures, while waiting to achieve the expected objectives of vaccination, calling for the integration of pharmacists in this national campaign to defeat the Covid-19.

While specifying that the role of pharmacists remains on a voluntary basis in vaccinodromes, Ms. Moutawakil said: “We hope that these health professionals can also vaccinate against Covid-19 to facilitate access to vaccines, accelerate the vaccination campaign and relieve the pressure experienced by certain vaccination centers ”.

Because that, she added, will allow us to take advantage of pharmacies which constitute local health establishments and which will support the health system of the country in this exceptional situation.
