Between comrades, dolphins call each other by their “names”

A study taken up by the magazine Science shows that dolphins are able to memorize, within their circle of allies, the unique whistle that each one has. And use it to talk to each other, in order to collaborate better.

“Like members of a street gang.” Scientists already knew that dolphins have complex social relationships. They did not know that they “Summoned their friends” when the moment of “Capture and defend females in heat” had come. Thanks to a study published in the journal Nature Communications and taken up with enthusiasm by the magazine Science, it’s proven : “Dolphins learn the ‘names’ of their friends to form teams ”.

The names or, more precisely, the “Distinctive whistles” of each of their comrades: “Each dolphin, Explain Science, learns a whistle of his own from his mother, which he keeps for life. Dolphins recognize and learn each other’s whistles, the same way we know each other’s names ”. Individuals, the study continues, can experience up to “a dozen” of “names”, among their “Closest allies”.
