“I’ve never seen as many cameras as I did this year.”
Former World Series MVP Infielder Freddie Freeman talked about Shohei Ohtani, a pitcher who played under a massive 10-year, $700 million (106.7 billion yen) contract. After spending time with him as a colleague, he realized that “Shohei is truly a global superstar.”
Featured on American podcast “New Heights”. When asked by the host, “How crazy was the situation when Ohtani first came to Los Angeles? ”At the time, Shohei had already been there. (At that time) I had been playing for the Dodgers for two years, and when I pulled up, there were probably about 100 cameras (in the parking lot) I was taking pictures of every car that came in,” he says, recalling his shock.
“I think it was mostly Japanese media, but they (cameras) couldn’t tell which car Shohei and Yoshinobu (pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto) were in. I didn’t see a – never so many cameras during the season as I did this year.
For most of the season, the batting lineup was the “MVP trio” of No. 1 Otani, No. 2 infielder Mookie Betts and No. 3 Freeman. “And me and Mookie started laughing, but let’s say Shohei takes his last at-bat in the eighth or ninth inning, and 15,000 people get up from their seats and walk out from the stadium. He was like, “Because Shohei’s over.” Me and Mookie were like, “Oh my god, they really don’t care about us.” So, yeah.
Still, Freeman says, “It’s understandable.” The reason is that he went 50-50 (50 home runs and 50 steals) and became the first DH to win MVP. next year.” After seeing it up close, he suggested “value.”
