Bethesda Veterans Say Elder Scrolls 6 Won’t Copy Baldur’s Gate 3 Despite Massive RPG Success

Former Bethesda developer Bruce Nesmith thinks so The Elder Scrolls 6 it will not return to the complex interface and game mechanics of earlier games in the series, despite the popularity of deeper RPGs such as Baldur’s Gate 3.

Skyrim departed significantly from the classic RPG format based on the Dungeons and Dragons system, removing many of the main mechanics, including the attribute and level systems. Compared to today’s RPGs, Baldur’s Gate 3 returned more to classic tabletop mechanics, and while its success cannot be denied, Nesmith doubts Bethesda will follow suit.

I don’t think the success of Baldur’s Gate 3 indicates a return to more complex stat sheets and numbers. Whether the whole industry will follow suit, I don’t know. But I think Bethesda’s goal with Skyrim is to make sure the game doesn’t block the player.

An RPG legend, Nesmith has significant experience, starting with his work on the original Dungeons and Dragons at TSR and moving into PC game development in 1995, where he worked on The Elder Scrolls 2: Daggerfall . He also contributed significantly to the development of The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion and Skyrim.

Although Nesmith retired in 2021 and is not involved in the development of The Elder Scrolls 6, his opinion is still important in the industry.
