The Russian Artur Beterbiev is the new undisputed champion in the light heavyweight division and added his rival’s WBA belt to the three he already had: WBC, WBO and IBF. He defeated his compatriot Dmitry Bivol by majority decision (115-113, 116-112, 144-114) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
When the verdict was heard, Bivol expressed his astonishment, it was clear that he did not expect this ruling against him, in addition to the fact that it meant losing his undefeated status; Despite suffering a slight injury under his left eye, he offered a display of courage and excellent boxing, fast and powerful, impacting Beterbiev’s face and body on several occasions.
Bivol fired multi-punch combinations, attacked and moved with class against a strong Beterbiev, who also responded with the power of his counterpunch.
At the end of the fight, the new undisputed champion, Betrbiev, said that he had to make some changes during the fight, especially trying to put more power into his punches.
Bivol could not hide his surprise or frustration. Despite the result, he maintained that he tried to have a perfect fight, but that it can always be better than what is shown.
“I am a warrior and I have no excuses, I can only congratulate Beterbiev and his team,” Bivol said after the fight; When asked if he agreed with the verdict, he responded: “I can have my opinion, but the only reality is that he won and I congratulate him.”
