“Betelgeuse: Scientists Detect Increase in Luminosity of Red Giant Star”

LIVE Techno – After a violent dimming that occurred four years ago, scientists have detected a sharp increase in the luminosity emitted by the red giant Betelgeuse, where the star is at 142 percent of its normal brightness level.

Observations of Betelgeuse over the past 200 years have proven that the star changes brightness periodically, with astronomers recording two distinct brightness cycles, the longest of which spanned a 5.9 year cycle and a 400 day cycle.

Betelgeuse, the largest red giant star of this type is usually the 10th brightest star in the sky. This year, however, Betelgeuse is the 7th brightest star.

In April, officials detected a peak brightness reading at 156 percent, as quoted from the Sputnik Globe page, Monday, April 29, 2023.

“One of the coolest things about Betelgeuse is that we’re watching the final stages of massive star evolution unfold in almost real time for us, which we’ve never really been able to study this deeply before,” said Sara Webb, an astrophysicist at Australia’s Swinburne University of Technology. .

Officials have underlined that Betelgeuse is unlikely to go supernova, with the red giant’s brightness likely returning to normal by the end of the decade.
