Best-Selling Car Brands in Indonesia: Japanese Cars Dominate, Chinese and Korean Brands Struggle

Jakarta

Japanese brands still dominate car sales in Indonesia. Chinese and South Korean car brands are still struggling to catch up with Japanese cars.

Chinese cars have recently had more and more footholds in the country. Especially at the Gaikindo Indonesia International Auto Show (GIIAS) 2023, Chinese car brands are getting bolder. At least five new brands introduced themselves at the annual auto show, starting from Great Wall Motor, Haval, Tank, Ora and Neta. Prior to the five brands, Wuling, DFSK, and Chery had already appeared.

Nevertheless, Japanese cars are still not defeated. Especially when it comes to sales, Japanese brands still dominate. Citing wholesale and retail sales data released by Gaikindo as of July 2023, Japanese brands are firmly in the top position.

Toyota is at the top with retail sales of 25,908 units. Just below it is Daihatsu, recording sales of 15,373 units. Honda then trailed in third place with 9,009 units. Still from the Sakura Country brand, in fourth place is occupied by Suzuki, which recorded sales of 6,305 units. Closing the top five positions, there is Mitsubishi, which recorded sales of 5,100 units.

Hyundai then became the first non-Japanese brand to enter the top 10. Hyundai car sales became the sixth largest, with 2,296 units. What about Chinese car brands? Of the 10 best-selling car brands in Indonesia, there is only one Chinese brand that inhabits it. Wuling is currently the 10th best-selling car brand with retail sales of 1,954 units. Another Chinese brand closest to Wuling is Chery. Chery is right under Wuling and recorded sales of 441 units.

Another Chinese car brand that has been selling its cars in Indonesia since 2018, DFSK, is currently declining in sales. DFSK in July sold 147 units of cars to its customers.
