Kicker Adam Vinatieri has decided he’s done with football as he retires as the top scorer in NFL history.
On Wednesday, the 48-year-old athlete announced he was retiring. He did it during his podcasting stint The Pat McAfee Show.
The one with four Super Bowl rings has amassed an impressive 2,673 points in his long career spanning 24 seasons. He also holds NFL records for games played (397), most consecutive field goals (44), most playoff points (238) and most playoff field wins (12).
Vinateri began his NFL career with the New England Patriots in 1996, when he was hired as an undrafted player. He spent 10 campaigns with the Massachusetts team and won three Super Bowls there (2002, 2004 and 2005).
With the Patriots, he made history on the Goodell Tour by pulling off the field that started the New England dynasty in the dying moments of Super Bowl XXXVI against the St. Louis Rams. Vinateri did it again two years later, this time against the Philadelphia Eagles.
After his last coronation with the “Pats” in 2005, the product of the University of South Dakota continued his journey with the Indianapolis Colts, amassing his fourth league title (2006). Vinateri played his last season in 2019, he who had failed for a rare time in his prolific career. In total, he played 14 campaigns in the Colts uniform.
