Four years after the triumph of Dimitar Marinov, a film with Bulgarian participation grabbed the statuette this evening as well. “Navalni” with journalist Hristo Grozev won in the best documentary category.

Best movie: “Everything everywhere at once”

“The feeling is indescribable. This award is ours. It belongs to the whole team, to the wonderful people who made it possible”, said the producer of the tape when presenting the prestigious statuette. And he added: “This is for my father, who, like many emigrants, died young. He taught me that people are more important than profit and that no one person is more important than another”.

“Thank you to everyone who inspired us. As I grew up, I realized that the best thing we can do is protect each other from the chaos of this world,” said the film’s director, Daniel Quan.

Best Actress in a Leading Role: Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere at Once.

“Thanks! To all the little girls and boys watching me tonight – this is the banner of hope. It proves that when you dream big, they come true. Ladies, don’t ever let anyone tell you that you’re over the top! I wouldn’t be here without the entire team at Everything Everywhere at Once. I have to dedicate this award to my mother, to all mothers in the world. They are the superheroes, without them no one would be here tonight,” Yeo said.

“Congratulations to my family and friends in Malaysia. I will definitely bring the Oscar to you. I also thank my family in Hong Kong, where my career began. Thanks for giving me a shoulder to lean on to get me this far. Thanks to the Academy. We are really writing history!” added the winner of the prestigious award.

Best Actor in a Leading Role: Brendan Fraser for “The Whale”

“So this is what it looks like when you make your dreams come true. Thanks to the Academy for the honor! I’m grateful to Darren Aronofsky for throwing me a lifeline – creatively, with this idea. Samuel D. Hunter had written the story. Gentlemen, you have big hearts like whales. You have huge souls. It’s an honor to be in your category,” were Fraser’s first words after receiving the award.

“I started in this business 30 years ago. Things didn’t come easily to me and at one time I underestimated what I had until it was over. So I want to thank you for the recognition. It was like an expedition to the bottom of the sea and then floating up to the Sun. Thanks!” Fraser finished.

Best Director: Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert for Everything Everywhere at Once

“I want to dedicate this “Oscar” to the mothers of the world and especially to my mother and father. Thanks for not squashing my creativity when I was very kinky as a kid. Thank you to everyone who worked on our film,” Scheinert said.

“A director is nothing without his family and team. If our film has any genius, it is because of the people who bring it. Genius does not come from individuals, it emerges from the collective. There is greatness in each of us,” Quan added.

Animation: “Pinocchio” by Guillermo del Toro.

Actor in a supporting role: Ki Hee Kwan for Everything Everywhere at Once.

“Thank you! My mother is 84 years old and watching. Mom, I just won an Oscar. My journey started from a boat. I spent a year in a refugee camp and ended up on the biggest stage in Hollywood. They say that such stories only happen in the cinema. I can’t believe this happened to me. This is the American Dream! Thank you so much! Thanks to the Academy! Thanks to my mother, my brother! I owe everything to the love of my life – my wife. You have to believe in dreams,” Quan said excitedly.

Actress in a supporting role: Jamie Lee Curtis for Everything Everywhere at Once.

“Everyone who made this movie, we won this Oscar.” My dream team, my agent, we just won an Oscar. My family – my wonderful husband, our daughters. My sister – “Oscar” we won, my sister. All people who support cinema. Thousands, thousands! We just won an Oscar together.” Mom and Dad are also nominated for Oscars in various categories. I won an Oscar!” Curtis said.

Documentary: “Navalni”

“We owe so much to Hristo Grozev – our Bulgarian. Christ, you risk everything to tell this story,” said “Navalni” director Daniel Rohr.

The documentary Navalny follows the revelations that the Bulgarian investigative journalist makes after Alexei Navalny is poisoned in 2020.

Before the award, Grozev explained to NOVA that filming Navalny was difficult because they had to contend with constant surveillance and disinformation attempts by Russia.
