It’s a heartbreaking story that will hurt any animal lover. Also known as the “world’s loneliest orca,” killer whale Kiska died in Canada on Thursday. This was announced by the Marineland zoo, where Kiska lived until her death.

Previously, the female orca had continued to deteriorate health-wise. She was around 47 years old, veterinarians estimate.

Animal rights activists are calling for an autopsy on Kiska

Animal rights activists called for an autopsy on the Valkuh and regretted Kiska’s fate. “It is heartbreaking to know that Kiska will never have the chance to be relocated to a whale sanctuary and experience the freedom she so desperately deserves,” Animal Justice executive director Camille Labchuk said in a statement. “We demand justice for what Kiska suffered at Marineland,” added Labchuk.

“We are urging provincial authorities to release the results of a post-mortem examination and to prosecute Marineland for the unlawful hardship that Kiska has clearly endured in her final years.”

Caught with Free Willy whale Keiko

The story of the animal moved many people, not only in Canada. Kiska was caught in Icelandic waters in 1979. She was probably about three years old then. She was caught along with another whale: Keiko. He was sold to Mexico in 1985 and later found his way to SeaWorld aquarium park.

The orca was made famous in the 1990s by the film Free Willy. It was about the release of a whale and the friendship with a little boy. The Hollywood hit also led to increased efforts to reintroduce Keiko back into the wild. Ultimately, he was slowly released into the wild and died of pneumonia almost two years later.

Keiko and Kiska lived at Marineland near Niagara Falls on the Canadian side after their capture until the 1980s. Here the killer whales had to entertain visitors. Kiska gave birth to calves five times. All died before they became adults.

Kiska became depressed after her companions and calves died or were misplaced

In 2008, Kiska became depressed after her then-mate and a calf died. “She lost her best friend and her baby and you could see her sadness,” said Christine Santos, a former coach of Kiska. In 2011, her last mate, the killer whale Ikaika, was misplaced after SeaWorld sued the owners of Marineland for ownership and won.

Kiska hasn’t had company in her pool for more than ten years. At least she didn’t have to do shows anymore. In recent years, however, she has often attracted attention with atypical behavior. The animal was filmed repeatedly banging its head against panes in its aquarium.

Canada finally banned the keeping of whales and dolphins nationwide in 2019. The fate of Kiska helped and will at least prevent other whales from doing the same.
