They sat together in the sandbox. They bought ice cream, loved skipping rope and stretched a net over the table to play table tennis. Anne and Hanne, as they were known, feasted on New Year’s Eve with the oliebollen that Anne’s mother had baked. On rainy days, they withdrew after school with other friends in one of their houses on the Merwedeplein in Amsterdam. Two very normal girls growing up in the big city. Only they were of Jewish descent.
