You have voted for your favorite bakeries, here is the list of finalists for our Best Baguette in New York competition! More than 600 of you, dear readers of French Morning, participated in the selection of candidates. The final of this 2024 edition will take place on Tuesday, March 19 from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., in the heart of Manhattan, at the Market Line, located at 115 Delancey Street in the Lower East Side. During the final, several awards will be awarded: the Public Prize for the best baguette, awarded by your votes on site; the Grand Prix for the best baguette (1st, 2nd and 3rd places) awarded by the jury of professionals who will have tasted, blindly, the candidates’ baguettes. And the Special Bread Prize (1st, 2nd and 3rd place).
Here are the 14 bakeries that received the most reader votes and confirmed their presence in the final (in alphabetical order):
Bourke Street Bakery
Paul Allam comes from Australia. He co-founded a revered artisan bakery in Sydney (on Bourke Street, hence the name of the brand) before traveling the world and settling in New York in 2019. In May of this year he pandemic, he opened Bourke Street Bakery in NoMad. Since then, he has opened more stores in Chelsea, on the Upper West Side, in Grand Central Station and in Jersey City, New Jersey. Site
Breads Bakery
Winner of the Best Baguette competition in New York in 2022 (Grand Jury Prize and Public Prize) and awarded the Best Croissant 2023 (Public Prize and Best Original Creation), Breads Bakery is back in the list of finalists this year. The bakery, which focuses on using natural and organic ingredients, has grown well since its creation in 2013. It has five points of sale: the Union Square flagship and stores in Bryant Park, Lincoln Square, Rockefeller Center and Upper East Side. Site
Bread Story
Artisanal products “as we know them in France” confided Yann Ledoux to French Morning in 2021, shortly after opening his bakery in the East Village. The French baker set out on his own after having long held the position of head baker at Maison Kayser until the company’s bankruptcy in the United States in 2020. During our Best Baguette of 2022 competition, Bread Story won the second prize and that of Special Bread. Site
Brooklyn French Bakers
The Brooklyn brand has experienced rapid growth since its birth in 2022. The founders, a trio of converts (their story here) who came to the bakery and pastry shop a little by chance and late in life, have just expanded with the opening of a second store, in Park Slope after the one in Carroll Gardens. Teddy Collet, Nelly Azambre and Sabrina Labouré won the Grand Jury Prize in the Best Croissant competition last year. Their new challenge: winning the prize for best baguette this year! Site
Crispy Heaven Bakery
Fel Cassieli left her modeling job to devote herself to baking, to the point of opening her own store in March 2021 in the Soho district. Originally from the Czech Republic, the founder of Crispy Heaven Bakery offers a variety of European-style artisanal breads (baguettes, loaves, sourdough and cereal breads, etc.), sandwiches and salads. In the evening, on Fridays and Saturdays, she transforms her small establishment into a restaurant. Instagram
Heritage Grand Bakery
Heritage Grand Bakery has two stores, located next to each other on 40th Street near Bryant Park. The door on the left leads to the bakery and the one on the right to the Mediterranean-inspired restaurant. The owners know the world of artisanal baking well: Lou Ramirez, former partner of Maison Kayser and Fig & Olive, and former president of Pain Quotidien; master baker Luc Boulet; and Alex Garese, founder of Wolkonsky Bakery. The trio offers artisan grain breads, pastries and wood-fired pizzas. Site
La Bicyclette Bakery
“Good artisanal products at affordable prices.” This is still the credo of Florent Andreytchenko, the Champagne baker from Brooklyn known for his $2 organic bread baguettes – rare in New York. The artisan, which opened its first store in 2020 in Williamsburg, then a second in Fort Green, expanded last year to Carroll Gardens with a third bakery. Site
The François Bakery
Based in Forest Hills in Queens, Breton Francois Danielo is a regular at our competitions. Having become a baker in 2011, this former engineer defends artisanal quality. It offers many types of baguettes (tradition, country, cereals, etc.), pastries (kouign-amann, meringues, donuts, etc.) and artisanal pastries (strawberry, opera, etc.). Site
The oven
The East Village bakery proudly celebrated its 4th anniversary last month. Its founder Jean-François Hebert, grandson and son of bakers from La Haye-du-Puits (Manche), has overcome many challenges since the opening of his store in December 2019: the Covid pandemic, a broken storefront and a fire. Supported by neighborhood residents, the Norman baker is now a pillar of the neighborhood. Instagram
Mille-Feuille
Olivier and Nathalie Dessyn’s bakery has grown significantly since its creation in 2011 near Washington Square. The former computer engineer and the former engineer at Paris town hall, who chose to devote themselves entirely to their passion for bread upon arriving in New York in 2009, have since opened two other stores in the Upper West Side and Brooklyn. Ole & Steen
The Danish chain of artisanal bakeries, which arrived in Manhattan in January 2019, has seduced New Yorkers with its rye breads, sourdough boules and house specialty pastries, the Cinnamon Social, braid filled with vanilla-cinnamon pastry cream. Orwashers
Founded by a family of Hungarian immigrants in 1916, Orwashers is an institution for bread lovers. Launched on the Upper East Side to offer artisanal bread to immigrant populations from Europe, the brand now works with farmers in the region to obtain flour “made 100% in the State of New York “. In the bread section, you can find traditional products but also more unusual ones like wine breads. Orwashers is also present on the Upper West Side, in Fort Green (Brooklyn) and sells its products at countless New York farmers’ markets. Site
Pistachio
Breton Yvan Bedouet’s catering company offers traditional French dishes, savory and sweet pies, cakes, but also breads and pastries that it delivers from Brooklyn. The French community of New York regularly has the opportunity to discover the cuisine of Pistache executive chef Nicolas Buchot, a former member of Maison Kayser, during receptions at the consulate. French Morning told you the story of Richaud Valls, actor who became a baker during the Covid pandemic. Since Richaud NYC has become professional and sells online, to order, with the plan for its owner to open a bakery in the West Village – Richaud Valls has created an account gofundme to help him pay the rent. This is his second participation in Best Baguette New York. Site
