New York City Itinerary: 9 Days of Exploring the Big Apple

In just 20 days, a family of five will embark on an exciting journey to the vibrant city of New York. The family, consisting of a couple, their 18-year-old son, and two 14-year-old daughters, will be staying near North Bergen, New Jersey. From there, they will take buses that will drop them off at the Port Authority Terminal, a convenient twenty-minute ride away.
With the trip approaching, the family has begun to plan their itinerary. The goal is to make the most of their time in the city while also allowing for some leisurely enjoyment. They have divided their days by district, following recommendations, and have created a flexible schedule that can be adjusted depending on the weather.
Day 1 (Monday, July 17): The family will arrive at JFK Airport at 10:40 a.m. They will then take the Airtrain, followed by the metro and a bus to North Bergen. After settling in, they plan to take a neighborhood tour and enjoy a leisurely stroll along the Hudson River.
Day 2 (Tuesday, July 18): The family will wake up early and head to Castle Clinton for a Statue of Liberty cruise, including visits to Staten Island and Ellis Island. They will also explore the Immigration Museum. Afterward, they will return to Battery Park and take a short tour of the World Trade Center Memorial.
Day 3 (Wednesday, July 19): Another early start as the family heads to the iconic Brooklyn Bridge, walking from Brooklyn to Manhattan. They will then visit the 9/11 Museum and Oculus in the Financial District. The day will continue with explorations of Chinatown and Little Italy.
Day 4 (Thursday, July 20): The family will explore NoHo, NoLiTa, Tribeca, East Village, and the Lower East Side. The ladies in the family will also make a stop at the L Vintage thrift store.
Day 5 (Friday, July 21): The day begins with a visit to Summit One Vanderbilt, followed by a trip to the National Public Library. The family will then take walks around famous landmarks such as the Chrysler Building, Rockefeller Center, 5th Avenue, Bryant Park, St. Patrick’s Cathedral (no visit planned), and Grand Central Terminal. The day will end with a visit to the bustling Times Square.
Day 6 (Saturday, July 22): The family will start the day at the Richard Gilder Center, ideally with a butterfly visit. They will then pass by the Guggenheim and the MET Museum (no visit planned) before enjoying a leisurely walk in Central Park. To add some excitement, they will take a ride on the Roosevelt Island cable car, with a return trip and a ride on Roosevelt Island.
Day 7 (Sunday, July 23): The family will explore Brooklyn, visiting Dumbo, Brooklyn Heights, and enjoying the vibrant Bushwick Street Art scene. They will then cross the iconic Brooklyn Bridge and make their way to South Street Seaport.
Day 8 (Monday, July 24): The family will explore the High Line, Chelsea Market, Greenwich, and Washington Square.
Day 9 (Tuesday, July 25): With their departure approaching, the family is open to suggestions for their last day. One possibility is visiting Williamsburg. They will need to leave Manhattan around 5:30 p.m. as their plane departs at 11 p.m., and they are advised to arrive at the airport four hours in advance.
