Liputan6.com, Yogyakarta – When the rainy season comes, various potential diseases also appear. As stated by UGM epidemiologist, Citra Indriani. According to him, the potential for this emerging disease existed long before the Covid-19 pandemic. Call it the case began to increase, namely Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF).
“Because, during the rainy season there is an increase in mosquito breeding places Aedes aegypti so that the transmission is also higher,” he explained, Monday (11/8/2021).
Apart from dengue fever, Citra said that Leptospirosis is a disease during the rainy season, especially in areas where there are lots of stagnant water or frequent flooding. People living in flood-prone areas need to be aware of diseases caused by leptospira bacteria which are spread through rat urine and can infect humans through the skin, especially if there are wounds.
“Try to always use footwear to avoid Leptospirosis,” he advised.
The public is advised to always take care of the surrounding environment so that there are no rat nests, and clean the water channels around the house so that they do not become clogged and become puddles. If you are going to clean the waterways, try to use PPE to prevent bacterial infection Leptospira.
This FKKMK lecturer and researcher at the UGM Tropical Medicine Center added that diarrheal diseases are also prone to increasing during the rainy season, especially in areas affected by floods. Floods usually cause the sanitation system to be disrupted so that there is the potential for an increase in cases of diarrhea in flood-affected areas.
Furthermore, Citra said that malaria in some malaria-endemic areas will also usually increase when the rainy season comes. Then, another disease that usually appears is the common cold.
People must maintain immunity, eat nutritious and balanced food, and live a Clean and Healthy Lifestyle (PHBS) to avoid disease. In addition, the public is also still asked to comply with the 5M health protocol to prevent the transmission of Covid-19 because the spread of the corona virus has not stopped.
