Kiki Bertens will play Dayana Yastremska next week in the first round of the WTA tournament in Brisbane. It will be the first appearance of the Dutch in 2020.
28-year-old Bertens met Yastremska, nine years younger, twice and won both encounters without losing a set. The current number nine in the world beat the Ukrainian in the second round of the Beijing hard court tournament and in the group stage of the WTA Elite Trophy.
If Bertens manages to beat Yastremska again on Tuesday, a showdown with Anett Kontaveit or Hsieh Su-wei awaits in the second round. Last year the Westlandse stranded in the second round after a three-frater match against the Croatian Donna Vekic.
Due to the strong field of participants, Bertens was placed sixth in the Australian city of Brisbane. Among others, world ranking leader Ashleigh Barty, Karolína Plísková, Naomi Osaka, Elina Svitolina and Petra Kvitová give an appearance.
Bertens will also participate in the doubles in Brisbane, in which she forms a couple with Barty. It is not yet known against whom they will face the first round.
The WTA tournament in Brisbane is in preparation for the Australian Open. The first Grand Slam tournament of the year starts on January 20. Bertens, who will be coached by Elise Tamaëla in 2020, will still participate in Adelaide before that time.
