The Northern Mariana Islands, located in the Pacific, which have been US territory since 1975, participate in the primaries but not in the general elections. In 2016, Hillary Clinton won the Democratic caucuses there against Sanders, while Donald Trump won the Republican caucuses.

The Democratic electoral landscape was reduced to a bid between Joe Biden and Bernie Sanders, who said that he would remain in the race despite losing the Michigan primary in the Mini Super Tuesday, which reduced his chances of being chosen as a Democratic candidate.
