Budget doubled for Erasmus – petition with Sabine Hanger, the action community’s top candidate for the ÖH election: continue exchange for students after Brexit
Brussels (OTS) – “Education, exchange and mobility are essential for young people. Not surprisingly, the large majority of the Erasmus generation stand for a Europe without borders as a matter of course. With today’s decision on Erasmus and other EU youth programs, we are making almost 30 billion euros available for this. so that even more young people have the chance to gain important experience abroad, “says MEP Alexander Bernhuber, who represents the ÖVP in the Committee on Education and Culture. In the face of Brexit, too, he and Sabine Hanger, the action community’s top candidate in the ÖH election, are committed to securing and expanding student exchanges within the framework of Erasmus +. The European youth programs Erasmus +, Creative Europe and European Solidarity Corps will be adopted by the plenary today.
“I fondly remember when, thanks to Erasmus, I had the opportunity to do an internship on a farm in Denmark and was able to gain valuable experience,” says Bernhuber. “The budget for Erasmus + from 2021 to 2027 will be doubled to more than 26 billion euros – this is a huge success for the European Parliament.” In addition, there is a budget of 2.2 billion for Creative Europe and the European Solidarity Corps, which weighs over a billion euros and enables young people to do humanitarian voluntary service around the world.
“Erasmus has been the European flagship program for youth exchanges for more than 30 years. It’s a shame that Great Britain is no longer part of Erasmus +,” says Bernhuber. Together with the ÖH chairwoman Sabine Hanger from the AktionGemeinschaft, he is campaigning for a replacement solution. Says Hanger: “Our generation grew up in a Europe of opportunity, in a Europe without borders. It is a devastating blow to all current and future students in Europe that the UK’s withdrawal from the Erasmus program is now one again in the higher education sector That is why we as an action group have submitted a petition to the European Parliament, because a solution in the sense of an Erasmus replacement program with Great Britain is urgently needed! ” (Enough)
