Bernardinho is once again the coach of the Brazilian men’s volleyball team. Bernardinho explains return to the Brazilian team as coach
Coordinator of the men’s teams, from youth to adult teams, since September this year, Bernardinho will not leave his role. He will combine the position with the positions of coach of the main men’s team and Sesc-Flamengo. In April next year, he will lead the first training sessions in Saquarema (RJ), in preparation for the Nations League, scheduled for May, in Rio de Janeiro.
– (…) With Renan’s personal decision to temporarily step away from volleyball and the Brazilian team, I resume this position in order to continue the beautiful work done. I hope to contribute in some way with my experience so that we can seek the much-desired medal in Paris – declared Bernardinho.
President of the Brazilian Volleyball Confederation (CBV), Radamés Lattari classified Bernardinho as an “ideal solution” seven months before the Olympics.
– Bernardinho has undeniable technical qualities. He has experience, he was part of the process as coordinator, he followed Renan’s work, so nothing more fair than thinking about the best for Brazilian volleyball. And right now the ideal solution is Bernardinho.

Two-time Olympic champion with the national team, in Athens 2004 and Rio 2016, Bernardinho resumes the role he left after winning gold at the Olympics eight years ago. As a coach, Bernardo Rezende has been at every edition of the Games since Atlanta 1996, only being absent from Tokyo 2020. In total, Bernardinho has seven Olympic medals, one silver as a player (1984), two bronzes leading the women’s team (1996 and 2000), in addition to two golds (2004 and 2016) and two silvers (2008 and 2012) with the men’s team.
In this century, the men’s volleyball team has had only two coaches: Bernardinho (2001 to 2016) and Renan Dal Zotto (2017 to 2023). Last September, Bernardinho took on the role of coordinator of the men’s teams, from youth to adult teams. According to CBV, Bernardo’s mission in this role is to plan the work of adult and grassroots teams with a view to the Olympic Games in Paris 2024, Los Angeles 2028 and Brisbane 2032.

At the beginning of this Olympic cycle for Paris, Bernardinho directed the French men’s volleyball team shortly after the team won gold at the Tokyo Games. The Brazilian coach was in charge of the team that will host the next Olympics for just seven months, from August 2021 to March 2022. He cited personal reasons for leaving France. Bernardinho had separated from former player Fernanda Venturini and preferred to stay with his daughters in Brazil.
With the men’s team, Bernardinho also won three World Cup titles, two World Cups and eight World Leagues. Since 2004, he has also continued uninterruptedly as project coach for the Rio de Janeiro women’s volleyball team. Currently Sesc-Flamengo is vice-leader of the Superliga.

Bernardinho’s friend, Renan Dal Zotto left the Brazilian team after the victory over Italy, by 3 sets to 2, at Maracanãzinho, in the pre-Olympic tournament that guaranteed Brazil at the Paris 2024 Games. Renan said he made the decision because he was ” time to take a break.” Due to family decisions and medical advice, he resigned. In 2021, the coach was hospitalized due to Covid-19.
