Colombian cyclist Egan Bernal is in stable condition after the accident in training and subsequent two operations. The intensive care unit at La Sabana University Clinic is conscious and can move all limbs.
This was announced by the management of a medical facility in Bogota. According to doctors, the body of the 2019 Tour de France winner and last year’s Gira d’Italia responds to treatment excellently.
Bernal had an accident on Monday while training in his homeland. The 25-year-old Ineos Grenadiers crashed into the back of a bus at the side of the road at a team’s high-altitude training camp.
Bernal, who was riding on a time trial special, did not seem to notice that the vehicle had stopped. He suffered multiple injuries in the high-speed collision.
The operation required an injury to the chest and vertebrae of the thoracic spine, another operation was performed by doctors on the right leg due to a broken femur and patella.
In addition, Bernal also caused fractures of several ribs, which also resulted in lung injuries.
According to experts, given the severity of the injuries, it is unlikely that Bernal will race this year. A broken femur usually requires an eight-month break, and a patella fracture for even longer.
“I doubt he will be able to race this year. Not even on the Vuelta in September,” Camilo Pardo, a Colombian sports doctor specializing in cyclist care, told the AP.
