Bern Zähringer SECURITAS Direct (Skip Yannick Schwaller) and Aarau HBL (Skip Silvana Tirinzoni) won the Swiss Elite Curling Championship in Geneva, which was held from February 19th to 26th at the Center Sportif Sous-Moulin. Winning the title entitles the two teams to participate in the Curling World Championship, which will take place in Prince George (CAN) for women and in Las Vegas (USA) for men.
Yannick Schwaller (Skip), Michael Brunner, Romano Meier and Marcel Käufeler from CC Bern Zähringer are the new Swiss curling champions. The Zähringer won the best-of-3 series in the final for the championship against Glarus Belvédère AM (Marco Hösli) with 2:0 victories. Schwaller and his e teammates clearly won the first final game on Friday evening with 10:5. The second final game was much closer and was only decided in the additional end. There, Schwaller & Co. used the right of the last stone and wrote two points to the 9:7 final result. For the Bernese, it is the second title at elite level after 2020 and, after missing out on major events, Yannick Schwaller emphasizes a particularly great deal of satisfaction. Zug Cablex wins the bronze medal. Yves Stocker and his team defeated the defending champions from CC3C Genève (Skip Peter De Cruz) 9:8 in a thrilling game.
Among the women, Silvana Tirinzoni, Alina Pätz, Esther Neuenschwander and Melanie Barbezat from CC Aarau successfully defended their title from the previous year. The double world champions of CC Aarau around Skip Silvana Tirinzoni won the best-of-3 final series against St. Moritz (Skip Raphaela Keiser) with 2:1 victories. Tirinzoni & Co. decided the third and decisive game in the final with 8:4 in their favour. A threesome in the 6th end, which led to a 6:2 lead, made the preliminary decision. The Olympic team didn’t give up this lead before St. Moritz gave up after the 9th end.
Bronze surprisingly goes to the young up-and-coming team from Grasshoppers Club Zurich with Skip Xenia Schwaller. The Zurich team, who were able to compete at elite level for the first time, celebrated a sensational 8:2 win against Zug Gemperle AG (Skip Corrie Hürlimann).
World Championships 2022
By winning the Swiss Champion title, Tirinzoni and Schwaller qualify for the upcoming World Championships in 2022. The Women’s World Championships will take place from March 19th to 27th in Prince George, Canada. The Men’s World Championships will be held in Las Vegas from April 2nd to 10th.
