Bern Challenge: Promoting Cycling for Children and Young People

Classes from the fourth grade of primary school can register for the Bern Challenge and cycle to school as often as possible over a period of four weeks. They collect points and can win prizes in the competition. If you don’t have your own bike, you can get one from the city of Bern. The city also offers a security check on the school square if required.

Diverse support measures

Participation in the Bike2school campaign has been an important pillar of cycling promotion in the city of Bern for years. The offers geared towards children and young people also include children’s bike hire in the Tscharni, route suggestions for school trips by bike and – to evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the infrastructure – cycling along bike routes with children as experts.

With these support measures, the city of Bern wants to counteract the trend that fewer and fewer children and young people are cycling throughout Switzerland. The young cyclists should be shown that cycling is fun, healthy and protects the climate.

The aim of promoting bicycles and the associated expansion of infrastructure is to promote a shift to sustainable means of transport and to contribute to achieving the city’s climate goals.
