Berlin (dpa/bb) – For Labor Day on May 1st, Berlin’s new Senator for Economic Affairs, Franziska Giffey, campaigned for attractive working conditions in companies and businesses. “Berlin’s development into a leading European innovation and business location will only succeed if we also convince as a work location with the best conditions,” said the SPD politician on Saturday.
The former mayor said that employees and companies in the capital had shown resilience in a year marked by crises. When it comes to economic growth, Berlin is at the top of the nation at 4.9 percent. “The current employment figures confirm the positive development,” she added, referring to aid and a relief package from the Senate.
However, the Federal Employment Agency reported rising unemployment in Berlin on Friday. In April, 185,918 people were registered as unemployed, 3,183 more than in the previous month and 9,201 more than a year ago. The unemployment rate is 9.0 percent.
